Water Furnace International of Fort Wayne, Indiana, used a small well drilling machine to drill the shafts for the vertical, closed loop geothermal loops at the Virtual Villaminium at The Cliffs in Fort Wayne. 14 shafts were drilled to an average depth of 140'. That was the level where they hit limestone. Below you can see training that Water Furnace provided at The Cliffs for dealers that came in from around the country.

Water Furnace installed the closed loop vertically in these shafts. The loop is accompanied by a third pipe as it is inserted into the shaft. Once the pipes reach the bottom of the shaft, the third pipe is pulled out while pumping Bentonite Clay into the shaft. The Bentonite Clay compacts around the loops providing excellent thermal transfer. While the shafts are as deep as many wells in the area at 140', they do not in any way utilize the groundwater. It is a closed loop system installed vertically. You don't need much of a yard to install lots of loop. This is a very environmentally friendly heating and cooling system.
